There has been so much
information on Ned Kelly and his gang in recent times. Many books,
movies and documentaries some of which are rather misleading and
deceptive of what really occured.
I was constantly questioned by people
and forever correcting the many inaccuracies out there about
the Kelly Gang and their families.
The Catalyst for starting Kelly Gang
Educational Services was when my young son borrowed library books
from school. The reference books he bought home were full of
mistakes and I was determined to do something to get it
right.
I also owe it to the
memory of my descendants who's story of struggle, of family and
mateship and the fight for what you believe in regardless of the
odds. These Ideals we now hold close to us as Australians and make
us uniquely Australian.
It is vitally important
also to keep our family's oral tradition going and to tell others
what really happened.
There is so many chapters
of the Kelly story still untold and I want to thank those who have
helped me so far and more importantly inspired me to keep on
going.

In 1878, four policemen set out to arrest Ned Kelly
and Dan Kelly, Joe Byrne and Steve Hart for stealing horses and
cattle (a warrant was issued for the arrest of Ned and Dan
Kelly for attempted murder of Constable Fitzpatrick,
who testified he was shot by Ned Kelly. Steve Hart and Joe
Byrne were unknown to the police that day and just happened to be
camping with Ned and Dan near Stringybark creek). Ned Kelly
killed three of the four. The Kelly Gang then robbed banks in
Benalla and Jerilderie. (The Kelly Gang robbed
the banks at Euroa and Jerilderie they never robbed a bank at
Benalla) Ned decided to derail a train bringing police
to capture the gang, (The train never derailed
after Thomas Curnow was allowed to go home to attend his sick
wife. Instead he stopped the police train in prior to
its approach to Glenrowan by waving a lit candle behind a
red Llama scarf to make the train stop.) and in June 1880 the
gang held more than 60 people hostage in a hotel at Glenrowan while
waiting for a train. (some were hostages but the
majority were sympathisers eg.friends and extended family members of
the Kelly Gang and the majority were actually having a
party!!!) The police were warned: Dan, Joe and Steve
were burned to death in the hotel (only Dan
and Steve were burned to death, Joe sustained a bullet wound near
his femoral artery (groin area) and died almost instantaneously and
his dead body was dragged out by a catholic priest, Father
Gibney in a last ditch effort to save anyone still alive after
the police had set the inn alight) and Ned was shot in his
homemade armour. He was hanged in Melbourne on 11th November
1880. |
